GREEN BAY --- Avenging its Monday defeat and rallying back from down 2-1 on Tuesday afternoon, the Green Bay volleyball team defeated Northern Kentucky 3-2 at the Kress Center after a 15-11 fifth set victory. The Phoenix (3-5) dropped the first set quickly at 25-11, but put together a strong second set to bounce back and another strong fourth set to force the dramatic fifth set against the Norse (3-3).
GB controlled the fifth set early, jumping out to a 6-1 lead and taking control for good late in the set after holding an 11-8 lead. GB used a pair of
Kristen Paulus kills to go ahead 14-8, winning its first five-set match of the season.
The Phoenix attack had three players record double-digit kills, with
Alexandra Zakutney finishing with 15 kills and 10 digs for the double-double. Paulus also registered a double-double, racking up 10 kills and 11 digs.
Shannon Coughlin tallied 11 kills with
Tiffany Paalman adding seven kills of her own.
Zoi Sherolli highlighted the Phoenix defense, finishing with a career-high 22 digs. GB had eight blocks as a team, led by
Anna Eaton and Paalman with four blocks each.
Calli Gentry racked up 35 assists to just one error, also digging out six balls.
After swinging at a negative clip in the first set, GB bounced back to hit at .375 in the second set. Its fourth set marked its second-highest total, with a .256 mark. NKU finished with an even four kills and four errors in the fifth set.
The comeback after being down 2-1 was sparked in the fourth set, after GB was trailing 19-18. The Phoenix used three aces after an error by NKU, with Sherolli serving for four-straight points to take the 24-18 lead. GB won the set 25-19.
The Phoenix will hit the road next week Monday-Tuesday, paying a visit to Oakland.
