Green Bay Posts Double-Digit Win at UIC, Readies for #HLMBB Tournament

CHICAGO, Ill. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) --- The Green Bay men's basketball team capped off the regular season with a road victory at UIC on Saturday night, defeating the Flames 69-59 behind three double-digit scorers.

GB finishes the regular season at 8-16 overall with an 8-12 record in Horizon League play. Green Bay's all-time record against UIC improves to 65-41 following tonight's result.

The first half was controlled by the Phoenix, who ultimately went to the locker room with a five-point lead capped by a turnaround jumper from Amari Davis at the buzzer.

A difference maker in Friday's matchup was points in the paint, with the Flames dominating the category at 42-18. Green Bay stepped up its intensity underneath on day two and owned an advantage inside, 18-16, at the break.

The Phoenix scored the final six points of the first half and the opening six points of the second for a 12-0 run and a double-digit lead, 37-26, with just over 18 minutes to play.

Green Bay was able to create a bit of separation down the stretch, but things got interesting with 2:21 left when UIC's Jamie Ahale knocked in a 3-pointer to make it a one-possession game, 59-56.

Back-to-back and-1s from Ansong and Pipes helped put the game away for Green Bay, as the Phoenix held on for a 69-59 victory in the regular season finale.

Davis led all scorers on the evening with 20 points, his 20th game this season in double figures and ninth with at least 20 points. PJ Pipes finished with 18 points which was highlighted by another perfect performance at the line from the senior, who finished 4-for-4.

Emmanuel Ansong notched his first career double-double for the Phoenix, scoring 19 points and pulling down 10 rebounds in 33 minutes.

Green Bay shot an impressive 45.9% on the evening while holding the Flames to just 37.9%. UIC attempted 23 triples in the game but only connected on eight. GB also won the battle inside, finishing with 36 points in the paint to UIC's 26. A season-low three turnovers were surrendered by Green Bay.

The Phoenix will now shift focus to its first-round matchup with Purdue Fort Wayne on Thursday, Feb. 25 at the Kress Center with tip-off slated for 7 p.m. Green Bay swept the Mastodons in the regular season.
