GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) --- The Green Bay softball team earned a sweep of Evansville on Sunday, taking down the Purple Aces with a pair of comeback wins. The Phoenix secured a victory in game one, 6-5, before following up with a more convincing win at 6-3.
GB now improves to 2-2 on the young season following the sweep.
GREEN BAY 6, EVANSVILLE 5
The first game of the day was scoreless through three innings, as the Purple Aces took the lead with a trio of runs in the third inning. Evansville added another in the fifth to increase its advantage to 4-0Â as the teams prepared for the sixth.
The Phoenix offense erupted in the bottom of the frame, bringing six runs home to take control of the contest with only three outs remaining for the Aces.
A double from
Becca Edwards and a triple a few at-bats later from
Bailey Schultz led to the Green Bay advantage at 6-4. Evansville managed to bring one run across the plate in the seventh frame but was never able to pull even with GB, with the Phoenix securing its first win of the season, 6-5.
Freshman
Abby Freismuth gets the win after shutting the Aces out for the final two innings.
Alyssa Brewer shined at the playe, finishing 2-for-4.
GREEN BAY 6, EVANSVILLE 3
Evansville jumped out in front once again in game two of the doubleheader, scoring one run in each of the first three innings.
A fourth-inning rally saw GB plate six and take control of the game.
Morgan Bihun cleared the bases with a grand slam to double-up the Purple Aces at 6-3.
The Green Bay pitching combined with its defense held Evansville off the board the remainder of the game to claim the win, 6-3.
Kayla Schwebke went the distance in the circle for GB, earning the win.
Green Bay is back in action next weekend at Chattanooga, with the Phoenix scheduled to take the diamond in four games.
