Hot Start Helps Green Bay Take Down IUPUI Saturday Night

GREEN BAY, Wis (GreenBayPhoenix.com) --- Green Bay took down IUPUI at the Kress Center on Saturday night, defeating the Jaguars 79-72 behind a balanced effort from its offense. The Phoenix enjoyed four scorers in double figures and finished an impressive 35-for-38 at the free throw line.

GB improved to 6-10 in Horizon League play following the victory, while IUPUI fell to 4-8.

Green Bay dominated the opening half and constructed a 23-point lead at the break, 41-18. The Phoenix shot 48.3% in the first 20 minutes and finished nearly perfect at the charity stripe (11-12).

PJ Pipes led the GB attack on the evening with 20 points, his fourth game this season with 20+ points and his 15th in double figures. Pipes put in work at the line, much like he as all season, and finished 15-for-16 on the evening. Pipes' lone miss tonight was his first of the 2020-21 campaign and came after the senior had made 49 consecutive free throws, a program record for the Phoenix. Pipes effort at the line tonight was one for the record books as well, as his 15 makes places his second on the all-time list for made free throws in a single game. The Green Bay record holder is Keifer Sykes, who knocked down 17 against Chicago State in 2012.

The 35 free throws made as a team also breaks into the record books, ranking fifth all time for a single game in program history. The record is 41 and was also set against Chicago State in 2012.

IUPUI made some runs late, but was never able to pull closer than six as the Phoenix staved off the Jaguars for a 79-72 victory. GB is now winners in five of its last six at home.

Emmanuel Ansong finished with 18 points and nine rebounds in 32 minutes while going 6-of-9 from the field. Amari Davis and Josh Jefferson also broke into double figures, chipping in 13 and 12, respectively.

Green Bay continues its homestand next weekend as the team welcomes Northern Kentucky to the Kress Center on Friday and Saturday. Both games will tip-off at 4 p.m. and be streamed live on ESPN3.
