GREEN BAY — Despite close outcomes in all four sets, the Green Bay volleyball team fell to Purdue Fort Wayne 3-1 on Monday afternoon at the Kress Center. PFW snuck out a pair of 26-24 and 25-23 results, with GB winning the third set after PFW took a 2-0 lead.
The Phoenix (3-8) fell in the opening set 25-19, but showed grit in coming back in the second set after being down 24-18 and facing set point. GB won six-straight points to force a 24-24 tie, but an error and a PFW kill ended GB's comeback. After GB won the third set 25-21, the fourth set was again tight late with PFW leading just 23-22. The Mastodons used a pair of kills, including the set winner to secure the win.
A trio of GB players finished with double-figure kills, led by
Alexandra Zakutney with 20 kills and 13 digs for another double-double.
Shannon Coughlin added a season-high 17 kills with
Ashley Sledge recording 13 kills. Sledge connected on a .273 clip with three blocks as well.
Defensively, three players notched 10-plus digs, led by
Annelise Sparks with 12 digs.
Kayla Lass had 11 and setter
Calli Gentry finished with a double-double at 10 digs and a match-high 54 assists.
Green Bay will play its final match at home tomorrow at 1 p.m. against the Mastodons. GB will recognize its three seniors postmatch, with
Anna Eaton,
Ashley Sledge and
Kristen Paulus.
