GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) --- Scoring its most goals since the 2017 season, the Green Bay women's soccer team cruised to a 4-1 win over Detroit Mercy on Wednesday afternoon at Aldo Santaga Stadium. The Phoenix led 1-0 at the half, before netting three more goals in the second half and earning three points in its second game of the spring season.
Maria Wiefering got the scoring party started just over 60 seconds into the match, scoring on a nice pass from
Cam Castelan on a headed ball from
Morgan Myers. The score came off a corner into the box, played beautifully by all four players for the Phoenix.
After holding that lead the remainder of the first half,
Savanna Hayes put GB up 2-0 in the 51' on a header from
Audrey Wilson. Sixteen minutes later
Emily Murphy scored her first goal of the season, sprinting away from the Detroit defenders and beating the keeper in a 1v1.
Caitlin Hawley tallied her second goal of the year in the 70' after burying a shot from about 30 yards out. Hawley played a nice ball from
McKayla Kertscher and gave GB its fourth goal of the game. Detroit would add one in the 77' but it would be too little too late.
The four goals scored are the most GB has scored in a Horizon League game under head coach
Jason Spain, in his second season. It ties the most the program has scored since the season finale against Youngstown State in 2017.
GB will look to stay hot when it visits Oakland next Wednesday (March 17). The Phoenix and Golden Grizzlies will kick at 9:30 a.m. CT in Rochester.
