GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) --- The Green Bay softball team made its long-awaited return to the University of Wisconsin Green Bay's campus on Saturday afternoon, as the squad took the diamond at the newly-constructed King Park for the first time. The doubleheader marked the first true home game for the Phoenix in nearly four years, and it wouldn't have been possible without the contributions from key donors and stakeholders who invested in the project.
Mark King, Bay Tek, Bay Industries, Bruce Bell, the Dahlin Family, Jim Growt, Jim Wochinske and the UW-Green Bay Foundation played key roles in helping bring the facility to fruition.
The friendly confines of King Park appeared to give the GB softball team an extra boost, as the Phoenix posted back-to-back victories over league-foe Robert Morris in the facility's first official game action. Green Bay dominated the first game of the day, 13-0, as
Kayla Schwebke pitched a complete, one-hit game for the Phoenix and tallied seven strikeouts. The Phoenix followed that performance up with a 5-2 win over the Colonials, this time with
Brittany Baneck doing the work in the circle and only allowing two hits through all seven frames.
Green Bay's offense was firing on all cylinders the entire afternoon, with its 13-run performance providing the program's margin of victory since a 16-1 win over Rider on March 20, 2013.
Head coach
Sara Kubuske's squad improved to 9-5 on the year and 4-2 in HL play following the day's sweep, while also notching the team's third-consecutive victory.
The Phoenix tallied 21 hits through the first two games of the series, which included a pair of four-baggers from
Alyssa Brewer and the first-ever home run at King Park from
Morgan Bihun.
Crystal Guzman and
Samantha Saloun notched three RBIs each in the first game of the day, while
Bailey Schultz,
Jadin Justman and Brewer collected two apiece.Â
Green Bay wraps up the series with Robert Morris tomorrow with another doubleheader. The first pitch of the day is slated for 11 a.m. and both games will be streamed live on ESPN+.
