GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) --- The Green Bay men's soccer team handed UIC (3-1-1) its first loss of the season on Saturday afternoon at Aldo Santaga Stadium, 2-1, with both goals being supplied from sophomore
Ben Hughes.
The Phoenix (2-1-1) was on the board first, with
Fredi Ortega playing a perfect ball on a free kick to the head of Hughes, who was able to beat the keeper in the 13th minute and take control of the match .
The Flames' responed shortly after, as Jacob Graiber knotted the game in the 20th minute, corralling a deflection in the box and firing it into Green Bay's net.
UIC owned advantages in shots at 13-7, but both teams placed five shots apiece on the mark.
The game-winning goal for the Phoenix came in the 70th minute after a ball went from left to right of the UIC box, with
Bernard Assibey Rhule finding Hughes' right foot for his second score of the match. Green Bay was able to hold the Flames scoreless the remainder of the match to secure a 2-1 victory.
The Phoenix returns to the pitch Friday at Northern Kentucky with kickoff slated for 10 a.m.
