Dominant Pitching Helps Green Bay Softball Earn Two More Wins in Chattanooga

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) --- A pair of dominant pitching performances by Kayla Schwebke and Brittany Baneck helped the Green Bay softball team, now 5-3 on the season, earn a pair of victories on Sunday against Butler and Chattanooga in Tennessee.

GREEN BAY 2, BUTLER 1
Schwebke improved to 3-1 on the season, going the distance and allowing just one earned run and surrending just four hits to the Bulldogs. Butler won yesterday's meeting 3-0, but GB returned the favor on Sunday behind the junior's efforts in the circle.

Greta Thompson launched her first home run of the season in the third inning, a solo shot to give GB the 1-0 lead. After Butler answered with a solo bomb of their own, the Phoenix was able to plate the go-ahead and eventual game-winning run in the fifth. Bailey Schultz put the ball in play to the pitcher, whose error then allowed Isabella Curtin to score and lead 2-1.

Green Bay had six hits, two from Thompson and a double from Samanta Saloun.

GREEN BAY 5, CHATTANOOGA 0
A day after scoring five runs against the Mocs the first time around, GB plated five once again on Sunday. But it was the dominant pitching effort from Baneck in the circle that was the ultimate difference, going all seven innings and allowing just two hits. The Green Bay native faced just 25 batters, struck out four and walked only two, keeping Chattanooga guessing all day.

Four different players recorded an RBI for the Phoenix, totaling eight hits from six different players. Morgan Bihun and Alyssa Brewer each had a pair of hits, with Bihun adding an RBI and Brewer a run scored. Schultz was 1-for-3 with a run scored, as was Crystal Guzman with an RBI and a run scored.

GB scored one run in the second, one in the fourth, two in the fifth and one more in the sixth.

The 5-3 start to the season is the program's best start since 2014, the year it went on to win the Horizon League Championship and earn a trip to the NCAA Tournament. GB opens League play next weekend with a trip to Northern Kentucky for a four-game set.
