Phoenix Drops GBD Invite Finale to Northern Iowa, 3-1

GREEN BAY, WI --The Green Bay volleyball team lost to the Northern Iowa Panthers in four sets (22-25, 25-22, 23-25, 25-27) in the Green Bay Distillery Invite finale on Saturday night.

The non-conference loss dropped Green Bay to 1-3 on the season.

The Phoenix offense was paced by Alexandra Zakutney, who finished with 14 kills on the day. Tiffany Paalman added 11 and Iro Chounta chipped in with 10 as part of balanced Green Bay attack. GB got 12 digs from Abby Gardner along with five blocks from Paalman to lead them defensively.

How It Happened

SET 1 | The Phoenix rallied from a seven-point 20-13 deficit, but Northern Iowa held on to win the first set 25-22.

SET 2 | Green Bay fired back from a first-set loss to take set two 25-22, evening the match at 1-1. The Phoenix took a 1-0 lead and never looked back in the set to earn the victory. Green Bay opened up as much as a six point lead at 20-14 before closing out the set.

SET 3 | Northern Iowa took a 2-1 match lead after taking down the Phoenix in the third set. The Phoenix came up short in a back-and-forth battle, losing 25-23 in a set that featured four lead changes and was tied 12 times. Neither team had a lead of more than three points along the way.

SET 4 | Green Bay then fell in the fourth set 27-25 to finish off the match. The Phoenix came up short in a back-and-forth set, losing in a stanza that featured six lead changes and was tied 13 times. Neither team opened up a lead of more than four points along the way.
