Green Bay Drops Pair of Matches at UND Classic

GRAND FORKS, ND --- The Green Bay volleyball team fell 3-1 to Drake followed by a tough 3-2 defeat to Montana on its first day at the UND Classic on Friday. The Phoenix will look to come home with a victory tomorrow when the team faces tournament-host North Dakota at 11 a.m. 

Drake 3, Green Bay 1

Cora Behnke and Alexandra Zakutney both secured double-doubles, but Green Bay fell to the Drake Bulldogs 3-1 (27-25, 19-25, 16-25, 17-25).

The Phoenix were led by the double-doubles from Zakutney, who had 11 kills and 10 digs, and Behnke, who had 12 kills and 16 digs. Tiffany Paalman added seven kills to help the attack. On the defensive end, Abby Gardner chipped in for GB with 20 digs to go with nine blocks from Paalman.

How It Happened

SET 1 | A powerful defensive display helped the Phoenix take the first set 27-25. Green Bay recorded nine blocks in the set win. After the lead changed hands four times, the Phoenix took control for good at 25-24 and rode that advantage to victory.

SET 2 | Green Bay lost the second set 25-19 to tie the match 1-1. Green Bay trailed by as many as six points as Drake grabbed the advantage for good at 15-14 in a set that was tied up six times before the Bulldogs took over in the second half of the stanza.

SET 3 | Green Bay fell again in set three to make it a 2-1 deficit. The Phoenix lost a tough set 25-16. Green Bay trailed by as many as nine points as Drake grabbed the advantage for good at 11-10 in a set that was tied up two times before the Bulldogs took over the lead.

SET 4 | Green Bay lost the fourth set and the match, falling 25-17. The Phoenix trailed by as many as eight points as Drake grabbed the advantage for good at 17-16 and Green Bay wasn't able to recover in a set that was knotted up eight times before the Bulldogs took over in the second half of the stanza.

Green Bay lost to the Montana Lady Griz in five sets (20-25, 25-11, 16-25, 25-21, 10-15).

The Phoenix offense was paced by Shannon Coughlin, who finished with 16 kills on the day while accumulating a hitting percentage of .361. Cora Behnke added 12 and Alexandra Zakutney chipped in with 10 as part of balanced Green Bay attack. Defensively, GB had two players reach double figures in digs as Abby Gardner had 20 and Iro Chounta had 14.

How It Happened

SET 1 | The Phoenix found themselves in an early deficit, dropping the first set 25-20. Montana grabbed the advantage for good at 15-14 in a set that was tied up five times before the Lady Griz took over in the second half of the stanza.

SET 2 | Green Bay evened the match at 1-1 with a 25-11 set-two win. The Phoenix grabbed control of the set lead early on at 3-2 and held the lead the rest of the way. Green Bay opened its biggest lead of the stanza, 14 points, to finish off the set. The Green Bay offense also got a boost from four aces in the stanza.

SET 3 | Montana responded to win set number three, putting Green Bay in a two sets to one hole. The Phoenix fell behind on the first point and never clawed back into the lead before losing the set 25-16.

SET 4 | Green Bay then responded to secure set four 25-21 to force a fifth set. The Phoenix took control of the set at 5-4 and held the lead the rest of the way. Green Bay led by five points at 19-14 before finishing off the stanza, totaling 15 kills . Green Bay also supplemented their offense with four aces in the set.

SET 5 | Green Bay came up short in a back-and-forth match, winning the second and fourth sets, but dropping the first, third and fifth, which they dropped by the score of 15-10, to fall in the match. The Phoenix dropped the first point and fought from behind the rest of the way.
