YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - A late comeback attempt was cut short as the Green Bay men's basketball team fell to the Youngstown State Penguins 63-50.
Cade Meyer came up just short of a double-double, finishing with eight points while pulling down a season-high 10 rebounds for the Phoenix (4-15, 3-7). Kamari McGee and Japannah Kellogg III each chipped in with 10 points. Meyer, Kellogg, McGee, and Lucas Stieber all posted 31 or more minutes. It was the fourth time in the last eight games that McGee has recorded 35 or more minutes.
Nate Jenkins was solid off the bench, matching a season-high eight points and shooting 5-for-6 from the charity stripe in 20 minutes of action.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After falling behind 22-8, Green Bay went on a 7-0 run with 8:15 left in the first half, culminating in a bucket from Emmanuel Ansong to narrow the deficit to 22-15. The Phoenix continued to close the gap closer to halftime, cutting the Youngstown State lead to 24-21 after Jenkins drained a three with 1:36 left. Youngstown State held on to their lead, going in to the intermission up 28-23.
The Penguins once again started the half strong, going on a 14-4 run and constructing a 44-29 advantage after Dwayne Cohill sunk a jumper with 13:42 to go. The Phoenix responded with an 18-8 run of their own, punctuated by a McGee driving layup to make it a 47-52 game with 4:43 left. Youngstown State would have an answer, however, outscoring the Phoenix 11-3 the rest of the way to grab the 63-50 win.
