Green Bay Falls to IUPUI on Last-Second Shot

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. --The Green Bay women's basketball team fell in heartbreaking fashion to the IUPUI Jaguars 51-49 on the road Thursday on Anna Mortag's buzzer-beating shot with only one second left on the clock.

The Phoenix (7-5, 3-3) had three players score in double figures, led by Cassie Schiltz, who had 13 points. Hailey Oskey tacked on 12 points and Maddy Schreiber chipped in as well with 11 points.

The Green Bay defense created havoc in Thursday's game, forcing 18 IUPUI turnovers, and scoring 12 points off of them. Meghan Pingel's four steals led the way individually for the Phoenix.

HOW IT HAPPENED

After falling behind 14-8, Green Bay went on an 8-0 run with 4:31 left in the first quarter, culminating in Schreiber's second three of the quarter to take a 16-14 lead. IUPUI then responded to tie things up at 16-16 heading into the second quarter. Green Bay did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring eight of its 16 points close to the basket.

IUPUI started the second quarter hot, rattling off a 9-2 run in just over two minutes to grab a 25-18 lead with 7:50 left in the half. However, the Phoenix defense locked down the Jaguars attack for the remainder of the half, not letting them score another point in the frame. Over that final 7:50 of the first half, GB went on a 7-0 run capped off by another Schreiber three to tie the game at 25.

After intermission, IUPUI snatched a 34-31 lead before Green Bay answered back by going on a 7-0 run, punctuated by a buzzer-beating basket from Brooklyn Blackburn, to grab a 38-34 lead at the end of the frame. Green Bay played well near the basket, scoring 10 of its 13 points in the paint.

The Phoenix extended its lead in the early fourth quarter to 42-34 thanks to a made jumper from Schiltz and a pair of made free throws from Oskey. However, the Jaguars responded in a big way, going on a 15-4 run down the stretch to take a 49-46 lead with just under 30 seconds remaining in the contest. Down three, the Phoenix drew up a play that found an open Schiltz for three, who buried it and tied the game at 49 with 20 seconds left. However, IUPUI also got an open look on the other end, as Mortag cashed in an elbow jumper to give the hosts the win.
