Green Bay Unable to Slow Down Youngstown State, Falls 3-0

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - It was a tough night for the Green Bay women's soccer team Thursday, as they as they were shut out 3-0 at Youngstown State. The Phoenix loss dropped its record to 2-7-2 overall, and 0-3-2 in Horizon League Play.

Green Bay remains on two points in the HL standings through five conference contests.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Penguins opened the scoring early, getting a goal in the ninth minute from Elis Spindola that put them up 1-0. Besides the goal, the first half was practically even everywhere else. GB out-shot YSU 9-8, tied them with four shots on goal, and had two opportunities from corner kicks compared to the hosts' three.

The second half didn't go to plan for GB, as Youngstown State put the game out of reach with a pair of goals shortly after halftime. The first came in the 56th minute from Abriana Rondin, and the second was from Justine Appolonia. The Penguins protected their 3-0 lead and cruised the rest of the way to secure the three points.

The Phoenix was active offensively, totaling 14 shots in the loss, five on goal. McKayla Kertscher led the team with four shots, with Emily Murphy also showing flashes; taking three shots, two of them on goal.

GAME NOTES

  • Justice Taylor Colburn received a yellow card in the 23rd minute.
  • Annie Mason collected six saves for the Phoenix out of 17 total Penguins shots.
  • Youngstown State was also booked for one yellow card.
  • YSU had the advantage in corner kicks, 12-6.
  • Nine different Phoenix registered a shot.

UP NEXT

The Phoenix will turn home in hopes of snapping their four-game losing streak on Sunday, October 9 when they take on Cleveland State. Sunday is Pride Day at Aldo Santaga Stadium, with kickoff set for 1 p.m. CST. The Vikings currently sit fifth in the HL with 7 points.
