ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. --The Green Bay women's basketball had an end-to-end battle with Florida Thursday at the St. Pete Showcase, but eventually fell 61-52 thanks to a 20-8 fourth quarter for the Gators.
Callie Genke led the Phoenix (2-2) with 10 points and six rebounds. Hailey Oskey chipped in with nine points and six rebounds. Jasmine Kondrakiewicz also tacked on eight points off the bench.
Green Bay out-rebounded Florida 41-40 in Thursday's game, led by Genke's six boards. The Phoenix also pulled down 13 offensive rebounds and scored eight second-chance points.
The Green Bay defense caused its share of mistakes in Thursday's game, forcing 14 Florida turnovers. Those takeaways turned into nine points on the other end of the floor.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After falling behind 4-0, Green Bay went on an 11-0 run with 7:57 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Tatum Koenig, to take an 11-4 lead. Florida's Leilani Correa got an and-one with nine seconds left and entered the quarter break down 11-7. Green Bay did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring six of its 11 points close to the basket.
Florida fought back to tie the game at 17-17 before Green Bay went on a 12-0 run starting at the 5:52 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Schreiber, to take a 29-17 lead. The Gators cut into that lead with a 9-0 run of their own, but the Phoenix still enjoyed a 29-26 advantage heading into halftime.
The two teams traded baskets the entire third, both scoring 15 points in the frame. The Phoenix entered the fourth quarter with a 44-41 edge.
Florida flipped the script and exploded for 20 fourth quarter points while holding GB to just eight. The Gators got to the line 14 times in the frame and made 10 of them.
