TERRE HAUTE, Ind. --The Green Bay men's basketball opened the 2022-23 season with a tough 80-53 loss at Indiana State Monday night at the Hulman Center.
Davin Zeigler led the Phoenix (0-1) with 19 points and eight rebounds. Zae Blake added nine points in 18 minutes off the bench as well.
Brock Heffner was a standout defensively for the Phoenix, finishing the game with four rejections.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The first half was back-and-forth from the get-go. The Sycamores opened a 22-14 lead after an 8-0 run in just over a minute of game time. Zeigler responded immediately with a pair of buckets to keep the Phoenix within a possession at 22-19 with 7:47 left in the half. GB grabbed a 23-22 lead after a bucket from Garren Davis and another from Zeigler at 6:30. The Sycamores closed the half on a 12-8 run to take a 34-31 lead into halftime.
The Phoenix traded baskets to start the second half until the offense stagnated around the 16-minute mark. Indiana State outscored GB 34-12 from that point in the half.
GAME NOTES
» The Green Bay bench made an impact with 20 points on the night.
» The Green Bay defense forced 16 turnovers.
» 15 of Zeigler's 19 points came in the first half.
» Davis added seven points and two boards in 20 minutes off the bench.
» Green Bay got a team-high eight rebounds from Zeigler.
» Indiana State was hot from the floor, finishing with a 54.4 field goal percentage and 48.3 three point field goal percentage.
» ISU outrebounded the Phoenix 36-27.
UP NEXT
Green Bay will look to grab their first win of the season at Georgetown on Saturday. Tip-off is scheduled for 10 a.m. CT. Following the game in the nation's capital, the Phoenix will travel to Wisconsin's capital for a showdown with the Badgers on Tuesday, November 15 at 8 p.m.
