Strong Defensive Effort Leads Green Bay Past Illinois State, 63-49

NORMAL, Ill. - The Green Bay women's basketball team won their fourth consecutive game on Sunday, defeating the Illinois State Redbirds 63-49 win on the road Sunday.

Green Bay (7-3, 1-1 HL) had two players score in double figures, led by 12 points from Jasmine Kondrakiewicz and Sydney Levy, who chipped in with 10. Kondrakiewicz added four rebounds, while Levy had seven. Cassie Schiltz added nine points and a team-high 11 rebounds.

The Phoenix also collected 13 offensive rebounds and scored nine second-chance points.

DeAnna Wilson led all scorers with 19 points.

"A great team win", commented head coach Kevin Borseth after the victory. "We got contributions from just about everybody. Cassie had 11 rebounds, Julia took a charge, and Callie had a big three. Most importantly, we held them to 49 points".

Sunday marked the third time this season the Phoenix had held an opponent to less than 50 points.

HOW IT HAPPENED
After jumping out to an 8-7 advantage, Green Bay went on a 5-0 run with 6:29 left in the first quarter, increasing its lead to 13-7 with 6:29 left in the opening quarter. The Phoenix maintained that lead and ended the frame with a 20-14 advantage. Green Bay shot well from deep, knocking down four triples to account for 12 of its 20 points.

Green Bay kept its distance from the Redbirds, leading by five or more for the first 4:38 of the second quarter. The Phoenix eventually opened the floodgates, going on a 13-0 run that would span the final 5:22 of the half. Schiltz made a hook shot before Levy drilled a deep three, extending the lead to 29-20 with 4:44 to go. Kondrakiewicz would score four of the final eight points for GB to end the half, breaking the game open and taking a 37-20 lead into half. The Phoenix dominated inside the lane during the frame, scoring 12 of its 17 points close to the basket.

GB struggled to start the third quarter, scoring just four points in the first 6:27. In that span, Illinois State was able to pull within ten, punctuating a 14-4 run with a Paige Robinson layup. Kondrakiewicz helped give a spark for the Phoenix, scoring four consecutive points. Callie Genke provided more life for GB, driving inside for a layup before banking in a long three at the buzzer, entering the final frame with a 51-38 lead.

Neither team was able to get much going offensively in the fourth quarter. GB outscored the Redbirds 12-11 in the stanza, with Schiltz, Julia Hartwig, and Natalie McNeal scoring four points each. Schiltz scored all four of her points via the charity stripe, knocking down four free throws in the final 41 seconds, icing the game to help give Green Bay a 63-49 victory.
