GREEN BAY, Wis. -- The bats stayed hot Friday afternoon for the Green Bay softball team, as they brought home 10 runs en route to a 10-5 win over Purdue Fort Wayne. The win completed a sweep over the Mastodons and marked the fourth consecutive for the Phoenix.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Alicia Peters opened the scoring in the bottom of the first by ripping a two-RBI single up the middle to give the Phoenix an early 2-0 lead.
The floodgates opened in the second when the Phoenix exploded for six runs, highlighted by Sam Saloun's three-run blast that made it 7-0. Jadin Justman was able to go around the horn thanks to a double, which was followed by a throwing error by Sonia Solis that allowed Justman to score from second and make it 8-0 GB in the second inning.
Purdue Fort Wayne would attempt to claw back into the game, scoring two in the fourth frame and tacking on one more in the fifth. Brayden Lickey's sacrifice fly to left field cut the deficit to 8-3.Â
However, Green Bay's offense would wake up from their brief slumber, answering with a run in both the fifth and sixth innings. Katie Joten had a productive out by bringing Gracie Peterson home on a groundout to shortstop in the fifth. In the sixth, Peters powdered her sixth homer of the year over the right-field wall, re-extending GB's lead to 10-3.Â
PFW would try another comeback attempt, scoring two in the seventh on an Alise Hale RBI single and a Peterson error that allowed Hale to eventually score when Camryn Mosher was at the plate.
Peters and Saloun each racked up three RBIs to help power the Phoenix offense. Peters leads the team with six home runs through the team's first 24 games.
Abby Gawlinski (5-3) started in the circle and picked up the win for Green Bay. The right-hander went two shutout innings while giving up one hit, allowing four walks and striking out three.
Saloun went 2-for-2 at the plate, including the home run and three RBIs. Peters put together a 2-for-4 day, supplementing her three-RBI performance for the Phoenix. Randi McKay went 2-for-3 with two RBIs.
Purdue Fort Wayne was led offensively by Alise Hale, who went 3-for-4 with a triple and an RBI. Taylor Warne went 2-for-3 and walked. Shaina Eyre took the loss, dropping to 1-7 on the season after surrendering seven runs - all earned - in one inning of work.
