DETROIT, Mich. - The Green Bay softball team won their fifth straight game on Friday after big performances from senior Brittany Baneck and senior Tiffany Giese led the Phoenix to a 9-1 win over the Detroit Mercy Titans.
After falling behind early 1-0, the Phoenix responded in the third inning with a three spot. The first came on an RBI single from senior Tiffany Giese that scored sophomore Hailey Heckenlaible. Giese came around for GB's second run, scoring on an RBI single from sophomore Samantha Saloun. Saloun later scored on a throwing error for the third run of the inning.
The Titans failed to push any runs across before the Phoenix put together another big inning in the fifth. The Green Bay offense exploded for six runs in the inning, highlighted by a two-run double off the bat of junior Becca Edwards, which brought the score to 9-1 in favor of the Phoenix. The score remained 9-1 for the rest of the game, as Baneck shut down the Titans in the bottom of the fifth to finish the game.
Baneck (5-7) started in the circle and picked up the win for Green Bay. The right-hander went five innings, allowing zero earned runs on seven hits, allowing no walks, and striking out seven.
In addition to her three hits, Giese had two RBIs to lead the Phoenix. Junior Randi McKay put together a noteworthy performance at the dish as well, going 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Sophomore Samantha Saloun also contributed in a big way, putting together two hits in four trips to the plate while adding two RBIs.

GB will look to extend its win streak tomorrow with their doubleheader against the Titans. Game one is scheduled to start at 11 a.m. CT.
