Game Recap: Softball |

Giese Makes History, Phoenix Fall in Both Games of Doubleheader at Youngstown State

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Green Bay softball team battled, but fell in both games of their doubleheader at Youngstown State Saturday afternoon.

REWRITING THE RECORD BOOK

After breaking the single season stolen bases record on April 6, senior Tiffany Giese once again put her name in the record book today. Giese stole the 32nd base of her career in game two of Saturday's doubleheader, the most of any player in Green Bay history.

GAME 1 | Youngstown State 5, Green Bay 2

YSU jumped out in front with a four-hit, three-run third inning. Green Bay responded immediately in the top half of the fourth. GB scored their first run on a solo shot from sophomore Samantha Saloun, her seventh home run of the year. The Phoenix added another thanks to a bases loaded walk from sophomore Gracie Peterson to make the score 3-2.

However, the Penguins responded and created some extra separation with two runs in the bottom of the sixth to make the score 5-2, a score that would hold the rest of the game.

Freshman Abigail Gawlinski (6-5) started and took the loss in the circle for Green Bay. She pitched 6.0 innings and allowed five runs on nine hits.

Alicia Peters' three-hit day led the Phoenix offensively. Saloun stood out at the dish as well, going 1-for-4 with a home run and an RBI. Senior Tiffany Giese also contributed, putting together two hits in four trips to the plate while adding a double.

GAME NOTES

» Peters and Giese combined for five of GB's eight hits.
» Green Bay hitters left six runners on base.
» Peters and sophomore Jadin Justman each stole a base in the game.
» Youngstown State was led offensively by senior Nikki Saibene, who went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI.

GAME 2 | Youngstown State 1, Green Bay 0

Game two was a pitcher's duel between junior Brittany Baneck and YSU's Elle Buffenbarger. The game's lone run was scored by the Penguins in the bottom of the fourth inning after Bree Kohler tripled and later scored on an RBI-single from Yazmine Romero.

The Phoenix put runners on base in five of the seven innings, but could never bring those runner's home. GB's best chance to score was in the first inning when they stranded the bases loaded.

Baneck (8-9) was outstanding in the circle, pitching 6.0 innings of one run ball. Baneck allowed six hits, walked one and struck out a career-high nine batters.

Saloun led the way at the plate for the Phoenix in game two, going 1-for-2 with a walk.

GAME NOTES

» Seven different Phoenix got a hit in game two.
» Green Bay hitters left seven runners on base.
» The Phoenix outhit the Penguins 7-6.

WHAT'S NEXT

Green Bay will have a chance to bounce back very quickly with a doubleheader at Robert Morris on Monday. Following, they'll return home for a Wednesday doubleheader against Cleveland State.
