GREEN BAY, Wis. – The Green Bay women's soccer team is ready for their home opener tomorrow when they welcome the Chicago State Cougars to Titletown. GB's season-opening matchup this Thursday against St. Thomas was ruled a no contest after numerous weather delays. The teams will try to finish the game at a later date.

The Phoenix has never lost to the Cougars, boasting a 5-0 record all-time. Green Bay and Chicago State first met on September 5, 2014, when GB shut out the Cougars, 3-0. Chicago State has been shut out in three of the team's five meetings, averaging just 0.4 GPG, compared to GB's 3.6 GPG.
Chicago State lost to one of Green Bay's Horizon League foes, Purdue Fort Wayne, on Thursday night, 4-1. Delaney Kenney scored the lone Cougar goal to grab an early lead, but PFW would tie it not long before halftime. The Mastodons struck in the second half for three unanswered goals, including two from Mackenzie Evans.
ABOUT CHICAGO STATE
The Chicago State women's soccer program is relatively new, with the team's first season occurring in 2014. Despite some struggles, the Cougars have had several players make their mark on the program in the past few years. Last season, Barbara Castellanos was named All-WAC Honorable Mention, and in 2020, Sara Quevedo was named to the Preseason All-WAC team. Quevedo also garnered a Second Team All-WAC award in 2018.
Aulani Fernandez was named Chicago State's interim head coach on July1, 2022. She also served as a volunteer assistant coach at Valparaiso earlier this year. Before her time at Valpo, Fernandez was an assistant coach at Stanislaus State University in 2021. She helped lead the Warriors to an 8-6-4 record, and the team allowed just 10 goals in 18 matches.
THUNDERSTRUCK
Green Bay's game Thursday evening against St. Thomas was ruled no contest after several weather delays. The Tomcats were leading the Phoenix 2-0 in the 53rd minute when the stoppage came.
HOME SWEET HOME
The Phoenix finished 5-0-4 at Aldo Santaga Stadium last season. GB's average margin of victory at home last season was +1.10.
THE NUMBER OF THE DAY IS 2
Grutzner took over as Interim Head Coach for the final six games last season, which included the HL quarterfinal matchup against the Vikings and the HL semifinal game against MKE. Under Grutzner, the Phoenix went 2-2-2. Green Bay boasted the no. 2 scoring defense in the conference, surrendering just .887 goals per game, only behind Milwaukee, who had a league-leading .374 GAA.
NEW PHOENIX FACES
GB announced on May 26 the addition of 13 newcomers to the 2022 roster, which includes 12 freshmen and one junior. Katelyn Fishnick, Zoey Pagels, and Sierra Morgano, three of the freshmen, highlight the 2022 recruiting class. Fishnick was a WSCA First Team All-State member, Pagels was the WSCA Player of the Year in 2022, and Morgano became a US Youth Soccer National Champion in 2022.
