Green Bay Blanks Chicago State in Home Opener

GREEN BAY, Wis. - Green Bay held Chicago State scoreless and cruised to a 3-0 victory Sunday afternoon at Aldo Santaga Stadium in the 2022 home opener. Green Bay improved to 1-0-0 overall following the win and 6-0-0 all-time against Chicago State.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Green Bay broke the tie when Audrey Cassata scored her first career goal of the season in the 40th minute. The Phoenix had multiple opportunities to double the lead before intermission, totaling seven shots compared to just three for CSU in the first half.

GB scored early on into the second frame when freshman Zoey Pagels notched her first collegiate goal in the 54th minute on an assist from her freshman counterpart Katelyn Fishnick.

Chicago State tried to make things interesting later in the second half, but a stellar Green Bay defense kept denying chances in the box. Delaney Kenney took two shots, missing wide left on the first, before lining one right to GB goalkeeper Annie Mason on the second attempt.

From there, the Phoenix continued pushing in the final 10 minutes, garnering six shots, with the last going in for a Fishnick goal. Senior McKayla Kertscher brought the ball up the seam and found Chloe Schmidhuber, who set up Fishnick's first career goal.


GAME NOTES

  • Annie Mason recorded seven saves for the Phoenix and has tied Becky Grable for career shutouts (8). Mason's next clean sheet will put her in a three-way tie with nine career shutouts.
  • Green Bay put six shots on goal, while CSU registered seven.
  • In six meetings against Chicago State, GB has shut out the Cougars four times.
  • The Phoenix had possession for most of the game, controlling the ball 58 percent of the time.
  • GB out-shot the Cougars 17-to-9.

UP NEXT
GB will welcome Western Illinois to Aldo Santaga Stadium on Thursday evening for a 4 p.m. kickoff. It will mark the 12th meeting between the two programs and the first matchup since 2014. After the game, the Phoenix men will take the pitch against Eastern Illinois. General admission is free.
