GREEN BAY, Wis. – At last, the regular season has arrived for the Green Bay men's soccer team. Three out of the next four games for GB will be at home, starting with games this weekend against Eastern Illinois and Chicago State.

The Phoenix is 13-11-4 against the Eastern Illinois all-time, including a 6-4-2 record at home. GB has either won or tied each of the last four matchups. Meanwhile, the Cougars and Phoenix clashed for the first time last fall, drawing 1-1 on September 3.

ABOUT THE PANTHERS
Eastern Illinois began its men's soccer program in 1963. They spent seven seasons from 1975 to 1981 in Division II before beginning DI play in 1982. Josh Oakley begins his first season at the helm of the Panther program. He is no stranger to EIU, serving as an assistant from 2000-02, helping Eastern Illinois post a .555 win percentage in that time.
 
EIU will look to three graduate students, Peter Allen Jr., Chad Hamler, and Reed Axthelm, as leaders. The Panthers lost two of their stronger attackers from 2021, Davi Girardi, who led the Panthers in points and goals, and Lenni Kirschner, who led EIU in shots.
 
ABOUT THE COUGARS
After a three-decade hiatus, Chicago State brought back men's soccer in time for the 2020 season. The Cougars played just three games in 2020, finishing 1-2. Last season, they went 2-13-3. Head coach Trevor Banks will enter his third season with CSU.
 
Enrique Zamora, a senior midfielder, will try to pick up where he left off in 2021. The Yuma, Arizona native paced the Cougars with four goals, nine points, 23 shots, and 11 shots on goal in 2021. Three of his four goals were scored in non-conference action.
 
WELCOME TO MY HOUSE
Green Bay opens up the 2022 campaign by playing three of four at Aldo Santaga stadium. The Phoenix will play eight home games this season, highlighted by five Horizon League contests. The Horizon League home opener is on September 17 against Wright State.
 
ALLOW ME TO INTRODUCE MYSELF
The Phoenix got younger this last offseason, with Head Coach Jeremy Bonomo bringing in 20 recruits. In total, there are 14 true freshmen on the squad. 
 
WINNING WAYS
GB will look to get back on track in 2022 under Bonomo, who enters his eighth season at the helm of the program. Bonom's eighth season ties him with Simon Boddison as the second-longest tenured head coach in program history. Under Bonomo, the Phoenix has finished in the top half of the Horizon League standings four out of the last seven seasons, including a conference title in 2017.
