Coughlin Leads the Way as Phoenix Splits Day One at the Buffs Invitational

BOULDER, Colo. - The Green Bay Volleyball team split in day one of the Buffs Invitational on Friday. The Phoenix fell in straight sets to Colorado before taking down Denver three sets to one. 
 
COLORADO 3, GREEN BAY 0
HOW IT HAPPENED
SET 1 | Green Bay fell behind early, losing a tough first set 25-10. The Phoenix trailed by as many as 15 points as Colorado grabbed the advantage for good at 3-2 in a set that GB led just once before the Buffaloes took control.
SET 2 | The Phoenix started the second set strong gaining six points in seven plays, from there it became a neck-to-neck race to the set point. Green Bay built a 24-20 lead but CU rallied back to score six unanswered points to take the set to go up two sets to none.
SET 3 | Colorado finished the sweep with a third-set win. Green Bay fell behind on the first point and never was never able to mount a comeback, falling 25-20.
 
GAME NOTES
» Calli Gentry had a team-high two aces in the loss.
» Shannon Coughlin had a team-high eight kills and scored nine and a half points for Green Bay.
» Green Bay got a team-high 12 digs from Alexandra Zakutney.
» The Phoenix attackers were helped by a team-high 14 assists from Emma Johnson.
 
GREEN BAY 3, DENVER 1
HOW IT HAPPENED
SET 1 | The Phoenix endured a back-and-forth first set to win 25-22 in a stanza that featured three lead changes and was tied eight times. Neither team led by more than four points in the set.
SET 2 | Green Bay then lost set two 25-17, evening things at a set each. The Phoenix dropped the first point and never took the lead.
SET 3 | The Green & White put the second set loss behind and took a 2-1 match lead with a victory in set three. The Phoenix took control of the set early when the score was 2-1 and never looked back, taking the frame 25-15. Green Bay led by 12 points at 22-10 before finishing off the stanza, collecting 15 kills along the way.
SET 4 | GB kept the momentum going in set four, claiming the frame 25-50. Green Bay first took the lead at 12-11 in a set that featured eight ties and five lead changes. The Phoenix got a solid defensive performance from a front row that blocked five Pioneers' attacks and capitalized on 12 Denver attacking errors on the way to victory.
 
GAME NOTES
» Shannon Coughlin had a match-high 14 kills and seven blocks for Green Bay.
» The Phoenix got a match-high 19 digs from Kayla Lass.
» Green Bay attackers were helped by a team-high 23 assists from both Calli Gentry and Emma Johnson.
 
UP NEXT
Green Bay will look to finish the weekend 2-1 tomorrow when they take on Western Michigan at 1 p.m.
