GREEN BAY, Wis. -Â Green Bay volleyball knocked off the Youngstown State Penguins in four sets (25-22, 25-22, 24-26, 25-19) Saturday afternoon at home. It's the seventh win in a row for the Phoenix, and improves its record to 12-5 overall and a perfect 3-0 in Horizon League action.
Alexandra Zakutney led the Phoenix with 16 kills and 10 digs. Tiffany Paalman also added 16 kills to help the attack. On the defensive end, Annelise Sparks chipped in with 15 digs to lead the team.
HOW IT HAPPENEDÂ
SET 1Â | Youngstown State came out of the gates strong, opening up a 6-0 lead to begin the contest. Green Bay did not lead the set until the late stages, claiming their first advantage at the 22-21 mark before winning 25-22. The Phoenix supplemented their offense with four aces in the opening set to go along with three Paalman kills.
SET 2 | The Phoenix earned a second set victory thanks to another solid performance on the attacking end. Green Bay put together a .379 attack percentage with 14 kills in the set. Youngstown State also committed five service errors in the set. Green Bay's front row had a solid defensive performance, blocking four Penguin attacks in the frame. While the score remained tight for most of the set, a late 4-0 run by the Phoenix helped seal another 25-22 set win.
SET 3Â | The third set featured six lead changes and 13 ties. Zakutney, Paalman, and Cora Behnke all contributed four or more kills for the Phoenix. However, six GB attack errors helped turn the set to Youngstown State. Green Bay ultimately fell 26-24.
SET 4 | The Phoenix scored the first point and never trailed in the set to earn the victory. Youngstown State was stymied by six service errors, while Paula Gursching chipped in with nine kills. Green Bay earned its final two points on kills from Behnke, who was assisted both times by Calli Gentry.
GAME NOTES
» Green Bay had five players in double figures in digs, and three in double-digit kills.
» Zakutney registered a double-double with 16 kills and 10 digs and led all players with four aces.
» Gentry tallied a match-high 47 assists.
» Paalman and Gentry both tallied attack percentages at .400 or above.
» The Phoenix has won seven in a row, the longest win streak since 2019. The win streak in 2019 began with a win over Youngstown State.
» Before dropping the third set, Green Bay had won thirteen consecutive sets across five games.
COMING UP
The Phoenix will travel to face Purdue Fort Wayne on Tuesday before going on a weekend road trip on Friday and Saturday against Northern Kentucky and Wright State, respectively.
