Weikert Buries First Career Goal in Draw Versus Purdue Fort Wayne

GREEN BAY, Wis. – Two late second-half goals resulted in a 1-1 draw between the Green Bay Phoenix and Purdue Fort Wayne Mastodons in Thursday afternoon Horizon League women's soccer action.

Lanie Weikert notched her first career goal in the 60th minute before Morgan Reitano countered for PFW with the game-tying score in the 67th minute.

The tie moved Green Bay's record to 0-9-4 overall and 0-5-2 in Horizon play, while PFW moved to 5-6-5 overall and 2-3-3 in the HL.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Phoenix opened the first half by outshooting PFW 6-2 in the first 16:46. Laney Hoehnke was able to put a shot on goal but Mastodon goalkeeper Samantha Castenada recorded her first save. There wasn't much offense for the remainder of the frame, with just three shots total being recorded. Weikert and Aleah Reesman tallied a shot on goal for GB, but the score remained 0-0 going into halftime.


Zoey Pagels got in on the action in the second half. In the 58th minute, she spun her way around one Mastodon before finding Hoehnke, who sprayed a shot off the crossbar. A few minutes later, Pagels found Weikert, who found the top left corner of the net for her first career goal to give GB a 1-0 lead. PFW had a quick answer, scoring in the 67th minute on a Morgan Reitano goal. Reitano ranks fifth in the HL with six goals. Green Bay ripped off three more shots on goal near the 80-minute mark, but PFW held firm to result in a 1-1 tie.

GAME NOTES

  • The Phoenix outshot PFW 17-11 overall and 7-4 on goal.
  • PFW had six corners to Green Bay's three.
  • Weikert and counterpart Laney Hoehnke led Green Bay with five shots apiece.
