ROCHESTER, Mich. – It was a hard-fought battle across Lake Michigan Sunday afternoon between Green Bay and Oakland. The Phoenix and Golden Grizzlies tied 0-0.
The tie moved Green Bay's record to 0-9-5 overall and 0-5-3 in Horizon play, while Oakland went to 5-5-6 and 3-1-4 in the HL. Green Bay has recorded a draw in three of their last five games.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After firing three shots in the first 11 minutes, GB had a tough time getting things going offensively. Lanie Weikert reignited the Phoenix with a shot in the 25th minute, but it missed wide left. Less than a minute later, Elle Hill forced a save by Oakland goalkeeper Julia Zangerl. Laney Hoehnke ensued moments later with another shot on goal, but GB came up empty. Grace Miller tried to bury her first shot on goal in the 33rd minute, but Zangerl kept the contest scoreless in the opening frame.
The Phoenix tacked on two more shots on goal but Zangerl was able to corral both. Oakland ensued by peppering the Phoenix with four shots in a minute, but GB survived the barrage. Zoey Pagels gave Green Bay two more chances, forcing two diving stops by Zangerl, including in the 85th minute. GB goalkeeper Mallorie Benhart racked up three saves in the final 4:10 of the game, resulting in the 0-0 draw.
GAME NOTES
- Pagels and Weikert paced the Phoenix with three shots apiece.
- GB outshot Oakland 8-3 in the first half before being outshot 10-4 in the second half.
- There were 27 combined fouls called.
