Green Bay Falls to Youngstown State on Senior Day

GREEN BAY, Wis. – The Green Bay women's soccer team celebrated Senior Day Saturday afternoon at Aldo Santaga Stadium, but fell to the Youngstown State Penguins, 2-0.

The Phoenix honored the 2023 senior class pregame. The class includes Madeline Cruz, Valerie Baca, Grace Miller, Elle Hill, and Vera Asare.

The loss dropped Green Bay's record to 0-10-5 overall and 0-6-3 in Horizon League action. The win is a big one for YSU, as the three points moves the Penguins to just two points behind sixth place in the HL standings. The top six teams in the Horizon League make the league's postseason tournament.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The difference in Saturday's match was a five-minute strong offensive stretch for the Penguins. YSU started the scoring with an outstanding strike from Chloe Weiland that nestled into the top right corner of the GB goal in the 26th minute. Just four minutes later, the Penguins doubled their lead when Jordan Evans was able to put away a 50/50 ball in the Phoenix box. Emma Berdiner assisted the goal. GB was outshot in the half, 8-2.

Green Bay upped the pressure in the second half, but failed to get on the board. The Phoenix outshot the Penguins, 11-4.

GAME NOTES

  • Mallorie Benhart collected five saves for the Phoenix out of 12 total Penguins shots.
  • Green Bay recorded 13 shots, two of those on goal.
  • YSU had five corner kicks to GB's two.
  • Both teams finished with four fouls.
  • Zoey Pagels led the GB offense with six shots while Lanie Weikert had four.

COMING UP

Green Bay will close out the 2023 season next Wednesday when they travel to Milwaukee for a 7 p.m. kickoff. Milwaukee currently sits in first in the Horizon League standings.
