Gardner's Historic Performance Not Enough as Green Bay Falls at Oakland

ROCHESTER, Mich. - The Green Bay volleyball team fell in five sets (25-20, 25-27, 25-18, 21-25, 11-15) to the Oakland Golden Grizzlies Saturday on the road at the O'Rena. Green Bay is now 6-3 in Horizon League play.

The Phoenix was led by a season-high 19 kills from Cora Behnke. Hannah Vanden Berg was also strong, finishing with 13 kills and 15 digs. Abby Gardner was outstanding defensively, recording a career-high 37 digs. That is tied for the fourth-most in a five-set match in program history.

Oakland was led by 21 kills from Patti Cesarini.

HOW IT HAPPENED

SET 1 | The Phoenix opened up an early one set to none lead, winning the first set 25-20. Green Bay found themselves down 14-8 early, but they rattled off a 10-0 run to grab control. GB also supplemented their offense with three aces in the opening set.

SET 2 | Green Bay then lost the second set 27-25, tying the match at a set apiece. The second set was the closest of the entire afternoon, featuring seven lead changes and 12 ties. Neither team led by more than three points along the way.

SET 3 | Green Bay bounced back and grabbed a 2-1 lead in the match with a dominant 25-18 win. The start of the stanza was key for the Phoenix, as its 8-0 lead proved to be the difference.

SET 4 | Oakland responded themselves and tied the match at two all after a 25-21 fourth-set win. The two teams battled back-and-forth the entire way until the Golden Grizzlies scored the final three points to close out the set.

SET 5 | The Golden Grizzlies used that momentum from the fourth set and jumped out to an 8-3 lead at the start of the fifth. GB clawed back to bring it to 9-8, but the hosts would end the set and the match with a 6-3 run.
