Phoenix Falls in Straight Sets at Purdue Fort Wayne

FORT WAYNE, Ind. -The Green Bay volleyball team could not overcome the Purdue Fort Wayne Mastodons Saturday on the road, losing in straight sets (23-25, 20-25, 23-25).

The loss dropped Green Bay's record to 9-14 overall and 7-4 in Horizon League action.

Hannah Vanden Berg was strong once again for the Phoenix, leading the team with 16 kills on a hitting percentage of .275. GB got 13 digs from Abby Gardner to lead them defensively. Emma Johnson finished the three-set match with 34 assists.

Horizon League kill leader Panna Ratkai led PFW with 21 kills while Jena Medearis chipped in with 10.
 



HOW IT HAPPENED

SET 1 | The first set of the day was back-and-forth the entire way. It featured four lead changes and 11 ties, the last of which was at 22 all. The Mastodons finished the set on a 3-1 run that included two Ashby Willis kills to take the set 25-23.

SET 2 | A 25-20 second-set loss put Green Bay in a 2-0 hole early. PFW's first set momentum carried into the second, as they got out to an early 4-1 lead. That lead never got smaller than two points. The Mastodons offense controlled the second set, finishing with 14 kills on a scorching .464 attack percentage.

SET 3 | PFW completed the sweep with another 25-23 set win. The third set was also extremely back-and-forth with the two teams finding themselves tied once again at 22. The third set played out similarly to the first, as the hosts scored three of the last four points to win, 25-23.

GAME NOTES

» Emma Best had a match-high two aces in the loss.
» Tiffany Paalman led GB with three blocks.
» Vanden Berg was close to another double-double, recording nine digs to go with her 16 kills.
» GB was outhit by PFW .165 to .299.

ON THE HORIZON

Green Bay will return home next weekend for a pair of matches against Robert Morris and Youngstown. The Phoenix will square off with the Colonials on Friday, Oct. 27 at 6 p.m. for the annual Attacking Alzheimer's Match. Following, GB will take on Youngstown State on Saturday, Oct. 28 at 4 p.m.
