GREEN BAY, Wis. – The Green Bay Phoenix men's soccer team rallied for a 2-1 victory over St. Thomas Tuesday afternoon at Aldo Santaga Stadium.
GB improved to 6-3-5 overall. St. Thomas dropped to 2-9-3 on the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Andrew Paolucci knocked a shot to the bottom left corner before Moritz Krenc made the save for St. Thomas in the ninth minute. Later on, Miles Akhibge forced Josh Snyder, GB's starting goalkeeper, to make his first save of the day. The contest remained scoreless for most of the half, up until the 45th minute when Akhigbe snuck a shot past Snyder. There was a cluster of Tommies and Phoenix in the box, but Akhibge was able to punch it in after being set up by Kevin Sliva and Carver Tierney. St. Thomas led 1-0 at the half thanks to Akhibge's effort in the final minute of the frame.
Sliva was part of a game-changing play early in the second half. He fouled Andrew Paolucci in the box, leading to the Orangeville, Ontario native burying a penalty goal to tie the game 1-1 in the 48th minute. Paolucci ensued with a shot on goal less than a minute after the kickoff, but Krenc tallied another save.
There was little offense to speak of nearly the entire rest of the way. It wasn't until the 89th minute when Jaden Prado lined a shot that wound up hitting Kajus Kontautas, and the ball sailed into the back right corner. Kontautas's score marked the third consecutive game that Green Bay has had a player score their first goal of the season (Tommy Coughlin at IUPUI and Rohin Kapila vs. Robert Morris). His goal proved to be the difference in the 2-1 win.
GAME NOTES
- Paolucci led all players with four shots.
- Snyder recorded one save for the Phoenix in his first career start.
- Green Bay had 11 corner kicks to UST's four.
