GREEN BAY, Wis. - The Green Bay volleyball team took down the top-seeded Milwaukee Panthers Tuesday night with a 3-0 sweep (25-21, 25-18, 25-22) at the Kress Events Center. With the win, Green Bay is now tied with Northern Kentucky at third place in the Horizon League with a 10-4 conference record. Milwaukee and Wright State are currently tied in first with an 11-3 league record.
The Phoenix was led by a double-double from Emma Best, who registered 13 kills and 15 digs on the day. Tiffany Paalman and Hannah Vanden Berg also chipped in with 13 kills. Emma Best and Ellie Kurpeikis led the Phoenix defensively with four blocks apiece.
HOW IT HAPPENED
SET 1 | Green Bay was on fire in the first set, finishing with 17 kills with a .400 attack percentage. Milwaukee jumped out in front at 9-4 before Green Bay responded with a 11-4 run to take a 15-13 lead that they would never relinquish. GB also got a solid defensive performance from a front row that blocked four Milwaukee attacks in the stanza.
SET 2 | GB used that first set momentum to grab the second set 25-18. It was back-and-forth until the Phoenix ripped off a 5-0 run to take a 17-12 lead that extended to a 24-16 lead. The Phoenix racked up 17 more kills to go with three aces.
SET 3 | Green Bay finished the sweep with a 25-22 third set win. Milwaukee grabbed a 16-14 lead when the Phoenix responded once again with a 5-0 run that gave GB a 19-16 lead they would never give up.
GAME NOTES
» Hannah Vanden Berg had a match-high four aces in the win.
» Green Bay put together a strong attacking performance, notching 50 kills in the match.
» GB outhit Milwaukee in the match, .319 to .237.
» Green Bay attackers were helped by a match-high 45 assists from Emma Johnson.
UP NEXT
The Phoenix will look to continue their three-match win streak this weekend at Northern Kentucky and Wright State. GB will take on the Norse on Friday at 5 p.m. followed up by Wright State on Saturday at 3 p.m.
