HOW IT HAPPENED
Northern Kentucky wasted no time in the opening frame, scoring in the 3rd minute. Maria Wiefering controlled a pass from Lilly Yordy and found the back of the net for a quick 1-0 lead. Just over 10 minutes later, the Norse took control of possession off a Green Bay corner kick and tallied another goal, this time from Sofia Wilmes on an assist from Natalie Newman. Sophia Kapszukiewicz tried to extend the lead but was denied by GB goalkeeper Mallorie Benhart. NKU continued to pressure the Phoenix towards the end of the first half, piling up three shots on goal in the final 11:43. Erykah Cornett scored an unassisted goal in the 38th minute on a ball that deflected twice before finding the left foot of Cornett. Northern Kentucky took a 3-0 advantage into the locker room.
NKU picked up where they left off coming out of the break, firing three shots (two on goal) in the first 15:17. Benhart made another save on a Cornett shot that split the pipes. Cornett wasn't done yet, recording her second goal of the day in the 65th minute to make it 4-0 Norse. The bright spot for Green Bay occurred in the 73rd minute, thanks to a handball by NKU. Zoey Pagels converted her second penalty goal and team-leading fourth goal of the season, ending the shutout. Northern Kentucky's big first half resulted in a 4-1 defeat of the Phoenix.
