HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – Two early first-half goals were enough to carry the Green Bay men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Northern Kentucky Saturday afternoon.
Green Bay improved to 4-3-4 overall and 2-2-1 in Horizon action following the win, while NKU dropped to 2-7-3 overall and 1-4-0 in the HL.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Norse jumped out to a quick 1-0 advantage after Wade Stinson found the back of the net in the 6th minute. Burlew Roberto and Maddox Behnfeldt set the graduate student up for his first goal of the 2023 campaign. Green Bay didn't take long to answer, scoring on a bizarre corner kick that deflected off NKU's Parker Vasic. He attempted to clear the ball, but instead, it went straight between the pipes for the game-tying goal in the 14th minute. Five minutes later, Parish helped set up another Phoenix goal on another corner kick. He found Andrew Paolucci, who headed the ball in for his third goal of the season, giving GB a 2-1 lead. Paolucci's goal proved to be the difference going into halftime.
Northern Kentucky outshot GB 7-4 in the second frame, but the Phoenix defense stood strong. Despite the consistent pressure, Green Bay allowed no shots on goal en route to a 2-1 win.
GAME NOTES
- Green Bay had four shots on goal to NKU's two.
- Each team tallied six corner kicks.
- Paolucci has scored a goal in the last two matches against NKU.
- Parish and Paolucci were the only two Phoenix to record two or more shots.
