CANCUN, Mexico – Green Bay women's basketball stayed hot for its third consecutive victory, blowing out UMass 85-52 on Thanksgiving Day. The Phoenix picked up their first Thanksgiving Day win since 2019, and Head Coach Kevin Borseth improved to 3-3 on the Holiday.
GB (3-1) had three players score in double figures, led by Cassie Schiltz's 16 points. Natalie McNeal tacked on 14 points and six rebounds, and Maren Westin helped out with 13 points off the bench. Bailey Butler dished out three assists. UMass fell to 1-5 but had a nice effort from Stefanie Kulesza, who scored 11 points. Jermany Mapp added 10 more for the Minutewomen.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Green Bay opened on a hot note, quickly taking a 9-0 lead capped by Butler's triple with 6:44 left in the first quarter. The Phoenix would extend the lead to a baker's dozen after Jasmine Kondrakiewicz executed a layup, making it 16-3. UMass found some rhythm before the end of the frame, thanks to Kulesza scoring four points and Kristin Williams' three-pointer. GB still held a comfortable lead after the first 10 minutes, taking a 22-12 lead into the second quarter, where they would open the floodgates. The Minutewomen would go cold, shooting just 3-of-13. Green Bay would take advantage, outscoring UMass 23-6 to hold a dominating 45-18 lead at the break. Schiltz was nearly unstoppable in the quarter, scoring nine points.
The Phoenix was on cruise control coming out of intermission, leading by no less than 25 the entire half. GB held a 30+-point lead for all but 2:39 over the game's final 20 minutes. Green Bay shot 50 percent in the second half and scored at least 18 points in all four quarters, including 22 or more in three of the four frames en route to the 85-52 Thanksgiving Day win.
