GREEN BAY, Wis. – The Green Bay men's basketball team has matched their win total from a season ago just six games into the 2023-24 season, with a 64-51 win over St. Thomas Saturday afternoon. The Phoenix is now 3-3 on the year heading into its Horizon League opener at Purdue Fort Wayne on Wednesday, November 29.
The Phoenix spread out the scoring, with just two players reaching double figures, led by Elijah Jones with 12 points and Marcus Hall with 10. Noah Reynolds set the tempo for GB, finishing with seven points, six rebounds and six assists.
Green Bay dominated the boards, outrebounding the Tommies 38-25. Reynolds and Rich Byhre led the way for the Phoenix with six each.
The Green Bay defense held St. Thomas shooters to only 31.7 percent from the field, including 22.7 percent from three-point range. Raheem Anthony led the way for the visitors, pouring in a game-high 18 points, to go with four assists and three rebounds.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Green Bay defense was stingy in the first nine minutes of action, allowing just two St. Thomas points until the 11:01 mark. At that point, the Phoenix had built a 12-4 lead that they would maintain for the majority of the half. Elijah Jones led GB in the first half with seven points and four rebounds, and the team went into the locker room with a 29-19 lead.
Green Bay kept its lead intact before going on a 5-0 run, finished off by Foster Wonders' three, to grow the lead to 34-21 with 15:22 to go in the contest. St. Thomas attempted to battle back, but Green Bay never let the visitors cut their lead to anything less than eight. GB hit their free throws down the stretch, and secured the 64-51 win.
