Green Bay Falls in Horizon League Opener at Purdue Fort Wayne, 75-71

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Green Bay men's basketball team came up just short Wednesday night in their Horizon League opener at Purdue Fort Wayne, 75-71.

The Phoenix (3-4, 0-1) had three players score in double figures, led by Noah Reynolds, who finished the night with 16 points and eight assists. Clarence Cummings III added 12 points off the bench in his first game of the season, and Elijah Jones chipped in with 11 points, seven rebounds and two steals.

The Mastodons were led by 19 points from Jalen Jackson, and 17 points from Maximus Nelson.

Both teams shot well from the floor, with the Phoenix finishing 28-of-55 (50.9 percent) from the field and 9-of-22 (40.9 percent) from three. Purdue Fort Wayne finished the night 24-of-53 (45.3 percent) from the floor and 8-of-20 (40.0 percent) from three.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Purdue Fort Wayne jumped out in front and built an early 10-point lead at 23-13 with 10:21 left in the first half. Green Bay responded with an 8-0 run in just under two minutes to cut the Mastodons lead to two. Six of the eight points in the run came from two Cummings' threes. The two teams traded baskets the rest of the half, and PFW entered halftime with a 36-32 lead.


The Phoenix came out hot to start the second half, hitting four of their first six shots and running off an 8-2 run to grab a 40-38 lead. Purdue Fort Wayne re-asserted control, and held a small lead throughout most of the second half until another Cummings three tied the game at 69 all with just :49 seconds left in the game. PFW's Qui Morton-Robinson responded with a three of his own to push the Mastodons lead back up to three, and the Phoenix was never able to recover, falling 75-71.

GAME NOTES
» Green Bay outrebounded PFW, 34-23.
» The Mastodons won the turnover battle, forcing 16 GB turnovers while committing just eight.
» GB's bench outscored PFW, 29-20.
» GB slightly outscored PFW in the paint, 34-30.
» There were 10 lead changes Wednesday night.
