Game Preview: Green Bay Welcomes UIC to the Kress Center

GB is home through the holidays

GREEN BAY, Wis. - On Wednesday, the Green Bay women's basketball team will play at the Kress Center for the first time in 31 days. The Phoenix will take on former Horizon League foe UIC in a primetime matchup. GB will attempt to get back in the win column after a close loss last week at DePaul, and Head Coach Kevin Borseth will take another shot at collecting his 800th career win.

ON THE CALL
Wednesday's contest will stream live on ESPN+, on watchespn.com, and in the ESPN App, available for free on iOS and Android. Play-by-play personality Ted Stefaniak will be joined by analyst Kati Coleman. WDUZ The Fan will carry the game on 107.5 FM, with Brian Kuklinski handling play-by-play duties. The pregame show begins at 6:40 p.m. on 95.5 FM & 1400 AM.

ABOUT THE FLAMES
Ashleen Bracey is in her second season as a collegiate head coach, both with the Flames. Bracey recorded a 19-17 record during the 2022-23 campaign and has guided UIC to a 5-2 start this season. The Flames boast a well-rounded squad that has a high-flying offense, averaging 80.3 points per game. Dais'Ja leads the charge with 14 PPG, while Makiyah Williams chips in with 13.1 points per contest. UIC has four total players that average double figures. Jaida McCloud fills the stat sheet, pacing UIC in rebounds (6.7 RPG), blocks (0.9 BPG), and minutes (28.1 MPG). Sandra Frau-Garcia gets the job done on both ends of the floor, leading the Flames in steals (2.3 SPG) and assists (5.1 APG).

MATCHUP HISTORY
Green Bay has dominated the Flames, recording a 78-7 record while averaging 70 PPG against UIC. GB hasn't lost to UIC since January 23, 2010, when the Flames defeated the Phoenix in Chicago, 81-72. Green Bay has won the last 27 matchups and 75 of the last 80 against the Flames. The Phoenix, in impressive fashion, has beaten UIC by at least 20 points in each of the last 12 meetings. Green Bay also holds a perfect 42-0 record when hosting UIC. The teams last met on February 17, 2022, when Sydney Levy poured in 21 points to lead all scorers in a 75-46 blowout win for GB.

October 18: Horizon League selects Green Bay to finish first in the Under Armour Preseason Poll.

WELCOME TO TITLETOWN
The Phoenix boasts a trio of true freshmen (Maren Westin, Sophie Lahti, and Meghan Schultz) and one transfer (Natalie Andersen, IUPUI). Westin and Andersen are guards, while Lahti and Schultz bring height to the forward position. Schultz stands at six feet, four inches, surpassing Kendall Renard as the tallest player on the team. The Phoenix once again boast a roster of mostly homegrown talent. Of the 13 players on the roster, 10 are from the dairyland. Only Westin (Becker, Minn.), Lahti (Pine City, Minn.), and Jenna Guyer (Circle Pines, Minn.) are not from Wisconsin.

BORSETH ON THE BRINK OF HISTORY
Head Coach Kevin Borseth can make history tomorrow night. The legendary coach can capture his 800th career victory with a win over the Flames. Borseth began his career in 1987 with Division II institution Michigan Tech, winning a whopping 225 contests in 11 seasons. The 2023 Horizon League Coach of the Year also needs just 13 more wins to get his 500th win as the head coach of the Phoenix. Additionally, Borseth is 26 wins shy of 600 victories in the Division I landscape.

WINNING WAYS
Green Bay has started the 2023-24 campaign 4-0 against winning teams. The Phoenix took care of business of Illinois State, No. 22-ranked Creighton, No. 23-ranked Washington State, and Milwaukee, all who had an above-.500 record when facing GB. Green Bay went 9-3 against winning teams last season.

MAKIN' MADDY
Maddy Schreiber has been a big part of Green Bay's early-season success, scoring at least 12 points in five of the first eight contests, including the last four straight. In those five games, GB's record is 3-2. She chipped in with 12 points in the upset win over then No. 23-ranked Washington State, 14 points in the upset victory over then No. 22-ranked Creighton, and poured in a career-high 23 points in the win over Milwaukee on November 30.

THE NUMBER OF THE DAY IS 11
The Phoenix has been part of numerous games this year where the contest was decided by 11 or more points. In 2022-23, GB was 21-2 in such games, and has started this season 5-1 in the same category. Green Bay lost to Northern Iowa by 11 in the season opener before beating Illinois State by 26, No. 22-ranked Creighton by 12, UMass by 33, No. 23-ranked Washington State by 11, and Milwaukee by 23 in the Horizon League opener on November 30.

STEALING THE SHOW
Bailey Butler put on a defensive clinic in Green Bay's big win over in-state rival Milwaukee on November 30. She racked up five steals, the most since Natalie McNeal tallied six in the Horizon League Championship Game last March. Butler is the only Phoenix to have recorded 10 or more steals (16 total, 2.0 SPG). Cassie Schiltz and Callie Genke are the next-closest to Butler with seven steals. Six Phoenix have tallied five or more steals.

LEAN MEAN REBOUNDING MACHINE
Natalie McNeal has been crashing the boards hard this season, pacing the squad with 5.8 rebounds per game. The fourth-year player from Germantown, Wisconsin is in her second season as a Phoenix after spending her first two collegiate years with Saint Louis, who Green Bay faces this Saturday. Her 5.8 RPG is currently on pace for a career-high. Her previous high was 5.3 RPG with the Billikens during the 2021-22 season.

JOINING THE RANKS
Green Bay is receiving votes for the third consecutive week in the AP Top-25 poll. GB tallied three votes in the Dec. 11 poll, tied wiht Penn State, Mississippi State, and Davidson. The Phoenix boasts wins over Washington State, who currently has 23 votes, and Creighton, who is ranked 20th in the country.

GB IN THE AP POLL
It's been several years since the Phoenix was ranked in the Top 25, despite a lengthy history of being in the poll. Green Bay was last ranked inside the top-25 during teh 2017-18 season, ranking as high as 19th before ending the season 22nd. GB was also among the best the in the country during the 2016-17, 2014-15, 2012-13, 2011-12, 2010-11, 2009-10, 2006-07, 2004-05, and 2002-03 seasons.
