Green Bay Drops Opening Day Double Header at UIW Invitational

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Friday was opening day for the Green Bay softball team, which is competing at the Incarnate Word Invitational in San Antonio, Texas. The first day of the season didn't go as planned for the Green & White, falling to Grand Canyon 9-0 and UIW 6-1.
 
GAME 1 | Grand Canyon 9, Green Bay 0
Grand Canyon jumped out in front early in a five-run second inning that featured a pinch-hit grand slam. The Antelopes blanked the Phoenix and added two runs in the fourth and fifth innings to force a run rule.
 
Green Bay managed one chance with runners on third in the shutout but finished the game 0-for-1 with runners in scoring position.
 
Senior Brittany Baneck (0-1) got the ball to start for Green Bay and took the loss.
 
Junior Jadin Justman and freshman Paige Hanson each finished with a hit for GB.
 
GAME NOTES
» Green Bay pitchers faced 30 Grand Canyon hitters in the game, allowing four ground balls and seven fly balls while striking out four.
 » Justman led the Phoenix at the plate, going 1-for-2.
 » Grand Canyon was led offensively by freshman Kaitlyn Brannstrom, who went 1-for-2 with a home run and four RBI.
 » Ariel Thompson was lights out in the circle, throwing five scoreless innings.
 
GAME 2 | Incarnate Word 6, Green Bay 1
Green Bay put runs on the scoreboard first when senior Tiffany Giese brought home sophomore, Lauren Porter. The Phoenix was unable to hold the lead however, as Incarnate Word would push across two runs in the fourth and four more in the fifth inning en route to a 6-1 win.
 
Freshman Viviana Guzman (0-1) started in the circle for Green Bay for the first time in her young career.
 
Freshman Kendal Hershbach was the lone Phoenix to get a hit in game two, finishing the game 1-for-3.
 
GAME NOTES
» Guzman pitched 4.1 innings for GB, allowing eight hits and four earned runs while striking out two.
 » Incarnate Word was led offensively by junior Avalon Sanchez, who went 2-for-3 with two doubles and an RBI.
 » Freshman Aaliyah Garcia led the Cardinals pitching staff, throwing seven innings of one-run ball.
 
COMING UP
Green Bay will look to get revenge on Grand Canyon at 10 a.m. tomorrow before taking on Eastern Illinois right after at 12:30 p.m. Following, they'll close out the weekend on Sunday against UIW at noon.
