SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Green Bay softball team split day two at the Incarnate Word Invitational on Saturday, falling to Grand Canyon 8-0 before taking down Eastern Illinois 1-0.
GAME 1 | Grand Canyon 8, Green Bay 0
Green Bay was on the wrong side of a dominant pitching performance in game one as Grand Canyon's Emily Darwin tossed a perfect game. Freshman Paeton Kringel (0-1) started and took the loss in the circle for Green Bay.
The Antelopes had control of this one from the opening inning, piling on three runs in the bottom of the first. Kringel was able to blank GCU in the second, but surrendered five more runs in the third as the Antelopes took the game 8-0.
GAME NOTES
» Only two Grand Canyon runs were earned.
» Grand Canyon was led offensively by senior Kristin Fifield, who went 2-for-2 with an RBI.
GAME 2 | Green Bay 1, Eastern Illinois 0
Freshman Kelly Greene got the start for Green Bay in game two, pitching a scoreless first inning before handing the ball over to senior Brittany Baneck for the rest of the game. Baneck pitched lights out the remaining six innings, striking out three and allowing just three hits the remainder of the game.
The lone run of the game came in the first inning when the Phoenix rallied with two outs and no one on. Hits from Jadin Justman and Paige Hanson, as well as a walk from Sam Saloun loaded up the bases before Lauren Porter's single brought Justman home.
In the batter's box, the Phoenix were paced by sophomore Lauren Porter, who went 2-for-3 on the day with an RBI.
GAME NOTES
» Greene and Baneck combined to throw a five-hit shutout.
» The Phoenix out-hit the Panthers at a 7-5 clip.
» Green Bay went 3-for-8 (.375) with runners in scoring position.
» Green Bay pitchers limited Eastern Illinois to just 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position.
» Porter led the Phoenix at the plate, going 2-for-3 with an RBI.
» Sophomore Alexa Rehmeier led the Panthers pitching staff, throwing four scoreless innings.
NEXT UP
Tomorrow the Phoenix will close the invitational by taking on hosts UIW at noon. Next weekend GB will travel to Evansville, Ind. to compete at the UE Softball Invitational from Friday, Feb. 17 to Sunday, Feb. 19.
