GREEN BAY, Wis. – The Green Bay men's basketball kept it close until the end, but lost 76-71 to the Detroit Mercy Titans at home Saturday. The Titans were led by a 41 point effort from the nation's leading scorer, Antoine Davis.
Clarence Cummings III scored 20 points and added six rebounds to lead the Phoenix (3-24, 2-14 HL). Zae Blake helped out with 18 points, and Cade Meyer chipped in with seven points, 11 rebounds and two blocks.
The Green Bay offense was very productive from downtown, knocking down 12 threes on 33 attempts. Six different Phoenix scored from three-point range.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After jumping to a 10-8 advantage, Green Bay went on a 9-0 run with 13:57 left in the first half, culminating in a three from Blake, to increase its lead to 19-8. The Phoenix kept a steady lead and gained another 11-point lead at 8:13 after a scoop-and-score from Blake. Davis then took over the game, nailing four straight triples to give UDM a one point advantage with 4:13 to go. GB battled back and took a 37-33 lead at halftime.
The second half featured five ties in the first 12 minutes. Cummings scored six straight Phoenix points from 17:11 to 14:01. Both teams entered the bonus with over 12 minutes to play. The Titans went on a 9-3 run with 5:38 and built their lead to nine points, their largest of the contest. Blake then scored six straight Green Bay points, and Cummings nailed a triple to bring GB within two points with 58 seconds to play. Forced to foul, the Phoenix gave UDM six free throw attempts in the final minute, and the Titans made five to seal the victory.
GAME NOTES
» The Phoenix bench chipped in 21 points while the Titans bench was held scoreless.
» Green Bay protected the ball Saturday night, turning the ball over a mere six times.
» Seven different GB players recorded at least one assist.
» Randy Tucker led all players with two steals.
» Four of Meyer's 11 rebounds were offensive boards.
» T.J. Moss recorded eight assists for UDM, leading all players.
ON THE HORIZON
Only four games remain in the regular season for Green Bay. The Phoenix will take a weekend road trip next week, playing at Robert Morris on Thursday and at Youngstown State on Saturday.
