EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The Green Bay softball team split their first two games at the UE Softball Invitational on Saturday. GB fell in their opening game to Southern Indiana 1-0 before bouncing back with a 6-5 win over UT Martin.
GAME 1 | Southern Indiana 1, Green Bay 0
The lone run of the game was scored by the Screaming Eagles in the fifth inning. USI's Jordan Rager drove home the run on an RBI single off the middle.
Green Bay managed two chances with runners on third in the shutout, going a total of 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position. The Phoenix last got a runner on third in the second, when junior Samantha Saloun made it 60 feet away from scoring with nobody out.
Senior Brittany Baneck (2-2) started and took the loss in the circle for Green Bay. The right-hander went seven innings, giving up one run on four hits, allowing five walks and striking out four.
Freshman Paige Hanson led the way offensively for the Phoenix, going 2-for-3 in the ballgame with a double.
GAME NOTES
» The only other Phoenix to get a hit was Kendal Herschbach.
» Southern Indiana was led offensively by senior Rager, who went 2-for-3 with an RBI.
» Josie Newman led the Screaming Eagles pitching staff, throwing 5.2 scoreless innings.
GAME 2 | Green Bay 6, UT Martin 5
The Phoenix got the scoring started early, putting four runs on the board in the top of the first inning, including a two-run single off the bat of junior Hailey Heckenlaible and a two-run single from Hanson.
The Skyhawks failed to push any runs across before the Phoenix offense got back to their scoring ways the next inning. Giese came across to score the lone run of the inning on a sac fly from Hanson to make the score 5-0.
Green Bay kept UT Martin without a run before building their lead to 6-0 the following inning. UT Martin wouldn't go away however, scoring a run in the third and four more in the fourth inning to make it a 6-5 ballgame. That's when freshman Viviana Guzman entered the circle and shut down the UT Martin offense, blanking them in the final three innings to secure the win for GB.
The Phoenix was once again paced by Hanson, who finished the game 1-for-3 with three RBI. Heckenlaible compiled a noteworthy performance at the dish as well, going 1-for-3 with a walk and two RBI. Giese also contributed for Green Bay, putting together one hit in two trips to the plate while adding two walks.

» Green Bay pitchers limited UT Martin to just 1-for-9 (.111) with runners in scoring position.
» The Phoenix drew seven walks from UT Martin pitching.
» UT Martin was led offensively by junior Kaci Fuller, who went 3-for-4 with a home run and an RBI.
» Junior Brooklyn Linneman led the Skyhawks pitching staff, throwing four scoreless innings.
» Guzman picked up her first win of the season.

The Green & White will continue the invitational tomorrow when they'll rematch both Southern Indiana and UT Martin at 9 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. respectively.
