Phoenix Finishes Day One at MTSU Invitational with a Split

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Green Bay softball team split their first day in Murfreesboro, Tenn. at the MTSU Invitational. GB took their first game of the day 7-1 over Western Illinois before falling to Middle Tennessee State in game two 6-2.

GAME 1 | Green Bay 7, Western Illinois 1
Neither team scored until Western Illinois got on the board in the third inning when graduate student Brittany Baneck walked home a run. The Phoenix didn't take long to respond, however, scoring two runs on back-to-back RBI singles from juniors Samantha Saloun and Jadin Justman.

Holding a 2-1 lead, the Green Bay offense exploded for five runs in the sixth inning, highlighted by a two-run double off the bat of Justman, which brought the Phoenix lead to 7-1.

Baneck (6-3) started in the circle and picked up the win. The right-hander went six innings, giving up one run on two hits, allowing five walks, and striking out five. Freshman Paeton Kringel also got an inning of work in, shutting the Leathernecks down in the seventh.

Paige Hanson had a three-hit day and led the Phoenix offensively. Justman compiled a standout game at the dish as well, going 2-for-4 with a double and three RBI.

GAME NOTES
» Game one was the first time Hanson has had three hits in a game as a Phoenix.
» Baneck picked up her sixth win of the season, which leads all pitchers in the Horizon League.
» Five runs is the most Green Bay has scored in a single game this year.
» The Phoenix out-hit the Leathernecks at an 11-4 clip.
» Green Bay went 4-for-12 (.333) with runners in scoring position.
» Green Bay pitchers limited Western Illinois to just 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position.
» Western Illinois was led offensively by freshman Luna, who went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI.
» Junior Price led the Leathernecks pitching staff, throwing three innings of five-run ball.

GAME 2 | Middle Tennessee State 6, Green Bay 2
The tournament hosts grabbed control of the game early on, scoring two runs in the first and two more in the second to take a 4-0 lead. The Phoenix responded with two runs of its own in the fourth inning thanks to RBIs from freshmen Aidyn Messman and Kaylin Fahy. GB was unable to get any closer, as Middle Tennessee State added two more in the sixth and took the game by a 6-2 final.

Freshman Viviana Guzman started and took the loss in the circle.

Fahy paced the Phoenix offensively, going 2-for-3 on the day with an RBI. Messmann was noteworthy as well, going 1-for-2 with a walk and an RBI.

GAME NOTES
» Green Bay left nine runners on base.
» MTSU outhit GB 12-7.
» The Phoenix drew five walks from Middle Tennessee pitching.
» Middle Tennessee was led offensively by freshman Ansley Blevins, who went 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBI.
» Sophomore Claire Woods led the MTSU pitching staff, throwing four scoreless innings.

UPCOMING
The Phoenix will be back for day two at the MTSU Invitational tomorrow starting at 10 a.m. when they take on Southern Illinois followed by Appalachian State at 12:30 p.m.
