GREEN BAY, Wis. – Green Bay women's soccer battled hard against the Drake Bulldogs on a steamy Sunday afternoon but fell 1-0. The loss dropped Green Bay's record to 0-2-0 overall, while Drake improved to 2-0-0.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Bulldogs took an early lead on a goal from Angela Gutierrez, her first of the season. Zoey Mahoney booted a pass downfield before Emma Nagel, a Green Bay native and Bay Port high school graduate, deflected the pass off her right foot, leading to a streaking Gutierrez. She put the ball just past the outstretched arm of Mallorie Benhart, who was making her first career start in the box for the Phoenix.
Green Bay pounded the offensive zone in the ensuing 10 minutes, tallying three shots, including two by Grace Miller. Bulldogs goalkeeper Kelti Wise made a diving catch on Miller's second shot from six yards out, keeping the game at 1-0 in favor of Drake. The Bulldogs notched two shots towards the end of the half but couldn't convert either, keeping the game at 1-0 going into intermission.
Neither team was able to generate much offense in the second half. Drake outshot GB 5-3 in the frame, but Benhart and the GB defense kept the Bulldogs at bay. Green Bay's last gasp came in the 82nd minute when Elle Hill ripped a shot off, but it sailed wide right as the Phoenix came up just short to the Bulldogs, dropping the contest 1-0.
GAME NOTES
- Benhart totaled three saves for the Phoenix out of eight total Bulldogs shots.
- Miller led the Phoenix with two shots, both on goal.
- A combined 23 fouls were committed in the match.
UP NEXT
The Phoenix will embark on a five-game road trip beginning this Thursday at DePaul. Green Bay will not have another home game until September 14, when the team begins Horizon League play against Wright State.
