GREEN BAY, Wis. – The Green Bay women's soccer team came up short Thursday evening against Wright State, dropping the contest 1-0 at Aldo Santaga Stadium.
The loss dropped Green Bay's record to 0-5-2 overall and 0-1-0 in Horizon action, while the Raiders improved to 3-3-2 overall and 1-0-0 in Horizon League play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Wright State pressured Green Bay to open the first 26:35 of the opening half. Each of the six shots came off the foot of a different Raider. The closest WSU got to finding the back of the net was on Olivia Mace's tracer, which looked like it would go out of bounds before spinning oddly towards the goal. Phoenix keeper Payton Lang was there to corral it, keeping the game at 0-0. Grace Downey would tack on a late shot that sailed high and wide right, and Lang would make another save heading into a scoreless halftime.
There were just three combined shots in the first twelve and a half minutes out of the break, but Lauren Borchert who opened the scoring in the 58th minute on an assist from Kaylin Helinski. Zoey Pagels nearly had an answer in the 63rd minute, almost leaking a shot past the outstretched arms of Raiders goalkeeper Kiera Sarka. She wound up making a great save, keeping WSU's 1-0 lead intact.
Green Bay's last breath occurred in the 76th minute when the Phoenix peppered off three shots (one on goal). Laney Hoehnke ripped a shot off before Zoey Pagels fired two shots in an eight-second span. However, the Raiders stood tall and staved off the Phoenix, winning 1-0.
GAME NOTES
- WSU outshot GB 14-9 overall and 6-4 on goal.
- Green Bay doubled their shots in the second half from the first half (6-3).
- The Raiders had two corner kicks to Green Bay's none.
