DELAND, Fla. – The Green Bay women's soccer team took to the pitch for the first time in nine days, tying the Stetson Hatters 1-1 in Florida.
Stetson scored a late goal to move to 0-5-1, while the Phoenix is now 0-2-2 on the young season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Aleah Reesman opened the game with a shot that missed just wide right. Stetson tried to answer with a pair of shots, one each from Hanna Arvay and Kendall Brittingham, but the score remained 0-0 through the first 14 minutes of action.
Georgia Place fired a shot in the 15th minute, not long before Zoey Pagels and Reesman tacked on two more for the Phoenix. The first real threat of the match occurred in the 24th minute when Lanie Weikert forced a save from Hatters goalkeeper Mallory Osborn. GB's offense was relatively quiet the rest of the opening frame, but Stetson rattled off six shots within the final 12 minutes. Despite the continuous pressure, Phoenix goalkeeper Mallorie Benhart recorded three saves to help keep the game tied at 0-0 going into the break.
Green Bay broke the glass seal with a goal in the 52nd minute, courtesy of Elle Hill. Sierra Morgano set her up, and Hill found the back of the net to give GB a 1-0 advantage. It also marked her first goal of 2023.
The Hatters kept pressing on offense and had several chances. After Hill's goal, Stetson outshot the Phoenix 9-1, but once again, Benhart denied every opportunity, tallying four more saves. It wasn't until the 81st minute when Stetson cashed in. Annika Seem scored an unassisted goal, her fourth of the season. She is responsible for every Stetson goal through the Hatters' first six contests.
Neither team could score again before the final whistle, resulting in a 1-1 draw.
GAME NOTES
- The Hatters had no less than 10 shots in each half.
- Seven of Green Bay's nine shots were on goal.
- Benhart piled up 11 saves out of 22 Stetson shots.
