MACOMB, Ill. – It was a tough day for the Green Bay women's soccer team Thursday afternoon, as the Phoenix fell to Western Illinois on the road 3-1.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Western Ill. opened the scoring with an 11th-minute goal from Alanna Pennington. The Leathernecks strung together a couple of passes that led to the goal, with assists going to Sachiko Gamo and Sarah De Gannes. Pennington scored her second goal of the day and doubled WIU's lead in the 33rd minute on a ball from Kayla Turner.
Green Bay cut deficit in half thanks to Zoey Pagels' 52nd-minute goal, her first of the season. Elle Hill was credited with the assist. Green Bay pressured the Leathernecks goal in the second half, looking for an equalizer, but WIU responded with their third goal of the afternoon. Kelsi McThenia gave the hosts an insurance goal in the 82nd minute that made the score 3-1.
GAME NOTES
- Green Bay and Western Illinois each received one yellow card.
- Payton Lang totaled four saves on the day.
- Green Bay put five shots on goal, while the Leathernecks had seven.
- The Phoenix commit 12 fouls, while WIU commit six.
WHAT'S NEXT
Green Bay will look to get in the win column on Sunday when they travel to South Dakota to take on South Dakota State at 12 p.m. Fans will be able to watch the game on the Summit League Network.
