GREEN BAY, Wis. – A hard-fought battle under the lights ended in a 0-2 defeat for the Green Bay men's soccer team Saturday evening. The Wright State Raiders tallied a goal in each half to improve to 3-4-3 overall and 2-2-0 in Horizon League play, while the Phoenix dropped to 3-3-3 overall and 1-2-1 in HL action.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Jake Parish opened the game for GB with a shot on goal in the 8th minute, but Alessandro Malterer, a Madison, Wisconsin native, recorded his first save to keep the game scoreless. The Phoenix and Raiders would trade off shots before Cole Werthmuller found the back of the net in the 22nd minute, giving WSU a 1-0 advantage midway through the opening frame. Andrew Paolucci tried to answer right away after the ensuing kickoff but missed directly over the crossbar. Green Bay attacked well in the final 16 minutes of the first half, outshooting WSU 5-3, but none of the shots yielded a score, and the Phoenix went into the break trailing 0-1.
Green Bay peppered the Raiders with seven shots in the first 20:32 of the second half, including two on goal, but WSU somehow kept the Phoenix scoreless. Chris Album and Christoph Schurz had an opportunity to tie the contest in the 49th and 54th minute, respectively, but Malterer again denied them. After Wright State tallied a few more shots, Henry Hutchinson took a great feed from Brady Shapiro, sneaking the ball past Tobias Jahn to extend WSU's lead to 2-0. Green Bay would tack on three more shots, including another two on goal, but a solid effort came up short in the 2-0 loss.
GAME NOTES
- Green Bay outshot the Raiders in each half, including 10-5 in the second frame.
- The Phoenix had six corner kicks, all in the second half, compared to WSU's four.
- Each team had 12 fouls and two yellow cards.
