GREEN BAY, Wis. – A halftime deficit didn't phase the Green Bay women's soccer team Saturday afternoon, as Zoey Pagels scored in the second half to tie the Cleveland State Vikings 1-1.
With the draw, Green Bay moved to 0-7-3 overall and 0-3-1 in Horizon play, while CSU moved to 3-7-2 overall and 0-3-2 in HL action.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Phoenix got after it right away on offense, when Laney Hoehnke lifted a shot off the mark in the second minute. Cleveland State answered not long after when Brooke Opferman buried her first goal of the 2023 campaign. There were eight total shots in the first 22:16, but the score remained 1-0 after Payton Lang made her second save of the match on a Mayra Sesmas shot. Green Bay's first real chance happened in the 10th minute when Grace Miller had a shot on goal, and GB had another opportunity in the 37th minute when Brooke Ricca recorded a shot on goal, ultimately falling into the hands of CSU goalkeeper Liv Fain. Fain's save kept it 1-1 going into halftime.
It took both squads to get things going out of the break. It wasn't until the 57th minute that Aleah Reesman fired a shot that went wide. The 66th minute became chaotic when Cleveland State held possession on offense. The Vikings got traffic into the box and got two shots on goal, but Lang made two fantastic saves to keep it a one-score deficit. Just over five minutes later, a handball was called on the Vikings in the box, giving Zoey Pagels a penalty kick. The sophomore found the back of the net, tying the game 1-1 in the 71st minute. Despite some last-minute chances for the Vikings, Green Bay held CSU for the final 19 minutes, resulting in a 1-1 draw.
GAME NOTES
- Lang totaled six saves on 14 shots.
- Nine different Phoenix tallied a shot.
- Cleveland State had eight corner kicks to GB's two.
