Green Bay Shut Out by No. 13 Western Michigan

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Green Bay men's soccer team fell to No. 13 Western Michigan 0-2 on Tuesday afternoon.

Green Bay dropped to 9-4-1 overall after the defeat, while the Broncos stayed undefeated with a 9-0-5 record.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Green Bay had a tough time getting going early. WMU nearly struck in the 11th minute when Braxton Arpachinda clanked a shot off the woodwork. GB keeper Alvaro Rodriguez made a save in the 28th minute to keep the contest scoreless. It wasn't until the 30th minute when Andrew Paolucci blasted GB's first shot, missing high over the crossbar. The Phoenix had a couple of chances late in the half, including a Paolucci shot on goal, but Western Michigan's defense stood strong behind goalkeeper Colin Welsh and it was 0-0 at the break.

The Broncos challenged Green Bay not long after intermission, forcing another Rodriguez save in the 57th minute. After the Phoenix tried to clear the ball, WMU retained possession before finding Owen Smith in the box. Smith dribbled the ball before kicking a ground ball that found the right side of the goal, giving the Broncos a 1-0 lead. GB nearly had an answer moments later when Tommy Coughlin had a shot go right to Welsh, who made another save. Western Michigan added on in the 85th minute on a goal from Emiel Nieuwhof, and the Phoenix fell 0-2.

GAME NOTES

  • Each team had seven shots, but WMU had a 4-3 edge on goal.
  • The Broncos had 10 corner kicks to GB's one.
  • Green Bay committed a whopping 27 fouls to WMU's 15. Eight yellow cards were handed out, four to each squad.
  • Paolucci led all players with three shots.

COMING UP
